These include<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>pigments and dyes, fertilizers<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>derived from phosphorus and potassium,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>metal<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>hydroxides and oxides, such as<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>lithium hydroxides<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>zync oxides<\/strong>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>carbides<\/strong>, such as tungsten carbide,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>plastics<\/strong>, and many others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drying<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>presents significant separation issues for chemical powders, especially in fluid bed, spray, rotary, and flash dryers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fluid Bed Drying Solutions for Chemicals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>Fluid bed designs typically include\u00a0<\/span><strong>process<\/strong><span>\u00a0cyclones with a\u00a0<\/span><strong>final dedusting system<\/strong><span>\u00a0(Bag Filter, ESP, Wet Scrubber High Efficiency Cyclones).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_image_0 et_pb_image et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.advancedcyclonesystems.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/chemicals-1_1202.png\" title=\"chemicals-1_1202\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.advancedcyclonesystems.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/chemicals-1_1202.png 600w, https:\/\/staging.advancedcyclonesystems.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/chemicals-1_1202-480x290.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 600px, 100vw\" class=\"wp-image-675\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span>The function of a\u00a0<\/span><strong>process cyclone<\/strong><span>\u00a0is to separate fluid bed exhaust stream from the dried products. The fraction of product escaping to the\u00a0<\/span><strong>final dedusting system<\/strong><span>\u00a0poses a set of operational challenges, such as\u00a0<\/span><strong>product cross-contamination<\/strong><span>\u00a0when rotating powders and downtime costs to clean filter bags that\u00a0<\/span><strong>frequently clog<\/strong><span>\u00a0in the presence of\u00a0<\/span><strong>high moisture<\/strong><span>\u00a0and\/or sticky powders. That is the case of several organic compounds, such as sulphanilic acid powder. When the collected product recovered cannot be immediately recovered, waste or side stream management is another problem to tackle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the operational challenges posed by the fraction of product that escapes to the final dedusting system is the potential for\u00a0<\/span><strong>product cross-contamination<\/strong><span>, particularly when dealing with rotating powders. Additionally, the presence of high moisture and\/or sticky powders often leads to\u00a0<\/span><strong>frequent clogging<\/strong><span>\u00a0of filter bags, resulting in downtime costs associated with cleaning. This is especially true for organic compounds like sulphanilic acid powder. Moreover, waste or side stream management becomes another issue when the collected product cannot be immediately recovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To address these challenges,\u00a0<\/span><strong>cyclone collectors<\/strong><span>\u00a0are the preferred method for recovering these very fine powders in the final stage due to their ability to\u00a0<\/span><strong>directly and hygienically capture<\/strong><span>\u00a0the powder. Unlike bag filters, electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), or wet scrubbers, cyclones offer greater robustness and can be easily and automatically cleaned, minimizing the risk of product cross-contamination and reducing operating costs and downtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, when dealing with powders with a median diameter in volume (MVD) of less than 10\u00b5m, losses resulting from\u00a0<\/span><strong>low cyclone efficiency<\/strong><span>\u00a0can significantly increase, translating into high costs. Even for processes involving less expensive chemicals where losses may not be as financially burdensome, it is crucial to consider the\u00a0<\/span><strong>environmental and social responsibility<\/strong><span>\u00a0impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Strict emission limits for a wide range of substances further necessitate the need for highly efficient end-stage filters to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. For the\u00a0<\/span><strong>final stage dedusting<\/strong><span>, whenever possible, the fines should be recovered in a high efficiency cyclone system.<\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0<\/span><br \/><strong>ACS solutions<\/strong><span>\u00a0include\u00a0<\/span><strong>very high efficiency process cyclones<\/strong><span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><strong>maximize yield<\/strong><span>. ACS final stage cyclones are also a real alternative to other police filters depending on the required emission limits and particle size of the product (&lt;30mg\/Nm<\/span><sup>3<\/sup><span>\u00a0is achievable), thus maximizing yield of the whole production line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Alternative setups of fluid bed drying<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>Alternative layouts include re-heating and re-injecting the stream under the bed. Even in these cases, the air needs to be clean of fine particles to avoid clogging that leads to expensive non planned maintenance stops. In the bleed off line, an ESP is commonly used but it comes with its usual drawbacks of both high investment cost and also operational and maintenance costs. When possible, the best way to comply with emission limits is through a second set of<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>high efficiency cyclones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Spray Drying of Chemicals\u200b<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>Some fine chemicals such as lithium hydroxide, other valuable metals or metal salts, several kinds of plastics or polymers, ceramic powders, and other products are dried through spray drying, where ACS has a vast experience.
